A career as an Artisan Instrument Mechanician involves the crucial role of maintaining, calibrating, and repairing instrumentation systems used to control and monitor processes in industries such as petrochemical, manufacturing, and energy. Instrument mechanicians are responsible for diagnosing and fixing instrumentation faults, ensuring accurate control of variables like pressure, flow, and temperature. Their work is critical to ensuring operational stability, safety, and process efficiency.

Core Responsibilities 

  • Perform maintenance inspections, trip tests, and calibrations for instrumentation systems, ensuring the efficient operation of equipment.
  • Calibrate and maintain instrumentation such as level, flow, pressure, and temperature controls.
  • Install, test, and commission instrumentation in line with company specifications and industry standards.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance activities and proactively identify defects in instrumentation and control systems.
  • Perform fault-finding and corrective maintenance using data from Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
  • Read and interpret instrument loop drawings, control logic diagrams, data sheets, and other technical documents.
  • Ensure compliance with EX and IS standards for hazardous areas, contributing to the safety and sustainability of the plant.
  • Troubleshoot and analyze issues related to instrumentation.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics, Science, and English.
  • NQF 4 Occupational Trade Qualification (Red Seal preferred).
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in instrumentation maintenance.
  • Experience with petrochemical equipment is an added advantage.
  • Proficiency in interpreting Electrical and Instrument Loop drawings, Mechanical Flow Diagrams (MFD), and Process Flow Diagrams (PFD).

  • Technical Expertise: strong skills in instrumentation and control system maintenance, including preventive maintenance and fault-finding.
  • Safety and Compliance: adherence to safety standards (EX and IS for hazardous areas) and maintenance procedures to ensure equipment reliability.
