Why a Career Transition as a Psychiatrist?
A career as a Psychiatrist you will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with mental health conditions, providing comprehensive psychiatric care in accordance with the Mental Health Care Act.
Core Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations to assess patients’ mental health needs and conditions
- Perform mental status examinations to evaluate cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests to aid in the accurate diagnosis of psychiatric conditions
- Formulate psychiatric diagnoses based on clinical assessments and diagnostic criteria
- Assess suicide risk and ensure patient safety through careful evaluation and intervention
- Evaluate patients’ capacity for decision-making in relation to their mental health care
- Document clinical findings thoroughly to maintain accurate and complete patient records
- Develop individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s specific needs
- Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications to manage symptoms effectively
- Provide individual psychotherapy to support patients’ mental health and therapeutic goals
- Manage psychiatric emergencies promptly to ensure patient and community safety
- Monitor treatment outcomes regularly to gauge progress and therapeutic efficacy
- Adjust treatment plans as needed to optimize patient outcomes and address changing needs
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- MBChB or equivalent medical degree with 2 years post-specialist experience
- Registration with HPCSA as a Specialist Psychiatrist
- Mental Health Care Act certification
- Completion of psychiatric residency
- Experience in various psychiatric settings
- Emergency psychiatry experience
