As a Medical Forensic Examiner you will specialize in conducting medical investigations to determine the cause and manner of death in cases involving suspicious or unexpected circumstances. This role requires expertise in forensic pathology, attention to detail, and a commitment to supporting the justice system.

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct autopsies to determine the cause, time, and manner of death in cases of sudden, unexpected, or suspicious death
  • Examine evidence from the scene, including clothing, toxicology reports, and biological samples, to provide a comprehensive analysis
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, including detectives and investigators, to collect information and evidence pertinent to death investigations
  • Prepare detailed forensic reports and provide expert testimony in court as needed
  • Work closely with forensic technicians and other medical examiners to ensure accurate and thorough investigations
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation, adhering to forensic and legal standards in South Africa
  • Stay updated on advances in forensic science, toxicology, and pathology

 

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • MBChB degree with 5 years of post-registration experience in forensic pathology
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a specialist in Forensic Pathology
  • Advanced training in forensic science or related fields is advantageous
  • Experience with toxicology, anthropology, or odontology in forensic contexts is beneficial

 

Core Competencies 

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret medical and forensic data
  • High attention to detail and methodical approach in forensic examinations
  • Excellent communication skills for report writing and court testimonies
  • Ability to handle potentially distressing cases with professionalism
