Core Responsibilities
- Safety, Health, and Environmental Compliance
- Adhere to all safety, health, and environmental practices and requirements.
- Follow SHE policies and procedures, escalating unsafe practices or risks to the direct supervisor/manager.
- Support good housekeeping practices on-site to ensure compliance.
- Actively participate in VFLs, risk assessments, and close-out of safety actions.
- Performance and Delivery
- Plan drill borehole positions, execute drilling, maintain a geological log, and capture geo-data, serving as an advisory authority.
- Ensure compliance with standards, policies, and procedures, including core and final depth blocks management, survey and chip samples, and borehole area rehabilitation.
- Ensure core and chip logging meets agreed standards and logs are accurately captured in the geological database.
- Verify drill hole data for accuracy before it is made available to Geo-data.
- Ensure proper sampling and numbering of drill holes per QA/QC protocols for chemical analyses.
- Verify analytical data upon receipt to ensure data integrity and that geological descriptions match analytical results.
- Validate data in the relevant database to ensure its integrity and availability for other sections.
- Oversee safe record keeping of borehole information post-sign-off, monitoring authority.
- Import information into relevant storage and modeling software, updating models to identify further exploration areas.
- Ensure accuracy and integrity of geo-data through surveying, sampling, and interpretation.
- Use updated geological models to identify further exploration opportunities, ensuring all interpretations are verified before specialist sign-off.
- Management and Coordination
- Supervise drilling contractors to ensure compliance with exploration plans and contracts.
- Coordinate and verify drilling information and samples received from contractors daily.
- Review and verify drilling meters on monthly invoices, recommending payments.
- Compile summaries of drilling metrics and deviations for monthly reports.
- Allocate work, measure performance, train direct reports, and maintain discipline.
- Optimize human resources to maximize section output, ensuring continuous performance improvement.
- Manage section expenditure within the approved budget to ensure effective cost control and savings.
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment, ensuring compliance with statutory environmental requirements.
Minimum qualifications and Experience
- Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12/N3 Technical
- NQF6 National Diploma in Geology
- SA Driver’s License
- Advantageous
- B.Sc. in Geology (NQF7)
- Relevant Advanced Certificate in Geology
- SACNASP Membership
Experience
- 3-5 years of operational experience in Geology within an exploration environment.
- Supervisory experience is recommended.
- Understanding of processes, working culture, and pressures impacting exploration, projects, and mining operations.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in geological software and tools
- Knowledge of drilling operations and geo-data management
- Experience with safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance in mining operations
