As a Heart Transplant Surgeon you will be performing heart transplants and managing patients with end-stage heart disease. This role requires advanced surgical skills, a commitment to patient-centered care, and the ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional outcomes for patients undergoing complex and life-saving procedures.

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct evaluations to determine patient eligibility for heart transplant and develop personalized treatment plans
  • Perform heart transplant surgeries, managing the complete surgical process from donor heart preparation to transplant and post-surgical care
  • Collaborate closely with cardiologists, transplant coordinators, anesthesiologists, and critical care teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes
  • Oversee post-operative care, monitoring for potential complications and coordinating long-term patient care and follow-up
  • Participate in on-call rotations for transplant and cardiothoracic emergencies.
  • Contribute to transplant team meetings, case discussions, and ongoing research initiatives in the field of heart transplantation

 

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • MBChB with 5 years of experience in heart transplant surgery and management of end-stage heart disease patients
  • Board certification in Cardiothoracic Surgery with specialized training in heart transplant procedures
  • Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)

 

Core Competencies 

  • Advanced proficiency in heart transplant procedures and comprehensive knowledge of transplant protocols
  • Strong diagnostic and decision-making skills under high-stakes, time-sensitive conditions
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in supporting patients and families
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and maintain high standards of patient care
